The Intergenerational School–East

Buckeye-Woodhill, Cleveland

Welcome to The Intergenerational School – East, the founding campus of the Intergenerational Schools network. For 25 years, TIS–East has been proving that learning is stronger when students, families, and community members of all ages come together. Here, every child is known, valued, and encouraged to grow as a confident, curious learner.

About Our Campus

Where it All Began

The Intergenerational School – East is the flagship campus of the Intergenerational Schools network, opening in 2000 with a vision of breaking down age barriers and creating meaningful connections across generations. Located in Cleveland’s Buckeye-Woodhill neighborhood, TIS–East has spent 25 years demonstrating what’s possible when education centers on relationships, individualized learning, and community.

Our students engage in hands-on learning, student-led projects, and partnerships with organizations like Case Western Reserve University and local senior centers. From leading Earth Day Fairs to presenting research at university symposiums, TIS–East students build confidence through real-world experiences that extend far beyond the classroom.

The school serves families from across Cleveland’s east side, creating a diverse learning community where students of different ages, backgrounds, and experiences learn together in small, supportive classrooms. Our teachers stay with students for multiple years, building deep relationships that help every child reach their potential.

TIS–East has made significant academic progress, improving its overall rating to 3 stars on the Ohio School Report Card and jumping from 1 to 4 stars in Gap Closing over the past two years, a measure of how well schools support all students. The campus also dramatically reduced chronic absenteeism, proof that students feel connected, engaged, and eager to be here.

Meet Our Principal

Aziz Ahmad

Principal, The Intergenerational School–East

“Welcome to TIS–East! I’m honored to lead the founding campus of the Intergenerational Schools, and I’m excited about where we’re headed. This school has always been a place where students are encouraged to be themselves, take risks, and discover what they’re capable of. That spirit continues today.

What I love most about TIS–East is the sense of community. Our students, families, staff, and partners all work together to create a school where everyone belongs. We celebrate growth in all its forms, whether it’s a student mastering a new skill, showing up consistently, or finding the courage to share their voice. Every step forward matters.

Our students are capable of incredible things, and my job is to make sure they know it. I’m committed to building on the strong foundation of this school and continuing to push for even greater success. My dream is for TIS–East to become the first 5-star K-8 school in Cleveland, and I believe that together, we can do it.

I look forward to meeting you and your family. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions or would like to schedule a tour.”

Sports, Clubs & After School

Beyond the school day, students at the Intergenerational Schools have opportunities to explore their interests, build new skills, and connect with peers through a variety of after-school clubs and activities. These programs are led by teachers, parent volunteers, and community partners, and they change throughout the year based on student interest and available resources.

From creative arts and storytelling to cooking, gardening, journalism, and theater, clubs offer students a chance to discover what excites them in a supportive, multi-age environment. Recent clubs have included crochet, upcycling, health leadership, Girl Scouts, theater in partnership with Playhouse Square, cooking through Food Strong, and student journalism. Each campus offers different programs each quarter, so check Bloomz for current offerings and sign-up information.
