About Our Campus

A Vibrant Community in Ohio City

Near West Intergenerational School opened in 2011 in Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood as the first charter-district partnership in the State of Ohio to co-locate with a district school in the same building (as part of the Cleveland Plan). For over a decade, Near West has served families from Ohio City, surrounding west-side neighborhoods, building a vibrant learning community rooted in collaboration, creativity, and connection.

Our students benefit from strong partnerships with nearby senior centers and community organizations, and a school culture that celebrates both individual growth and shared success. In our classrooms, students of different ages and abilities learn together, supporting each other’s development and building relationships that strengthen the entire school community.

Near West has consistently demonstrated academic excellence, earning the Ohio Community School of Quality designation every year since 2019, and most recently 3.5 stars on the Ohio School Report Card. It alsoranked second out of fifteen, only after a selective school for gifted students. TIS ranked second out of eleven public schools. Near West outperformed nearby public schools on almost every measure, every grade and subject, and achieved 100% proficiency in fourth-grade math.

This recognition reflects the dedication of our staff, families, and volunteers who work together to create a joyful, supportive environment where every student can thrive.

Sports, Clubs & After School

Beyond the school day, students at the Intergenerational Schools have opportunities to explore their interests, build new skills, and connect with peers through a variety of after-school clubs and activities. These programs are led by teachers, parent volunteers, and community partners, and they change throughout the year based on student interest and available resources.

From creative arts and storytelling to cooking, gardening, journalism, and theater, clubs offer students a chance to discover what excites them in a supportive, multi-age environment. Recent clubs have included crochet, upcycling, health leadership, Girl Scouts, theater in partnership with Playhouse Square, cooking through Food Strong, and student journalism. Each campus offers different programs each quarter, so check Bloomz for current offerings and sign-up information.
