Innovation means building around what works, not just what’s new. For 25 years, the Intergenerational Schools have designed every element of our model around two core truths: children learn at different paces and in different ways, and community strengthens learning across generations.

This quarter, we have good reason to reflect on what that commitment looks like over time. The Intergenerational Schools have been named a 2025 Program of Distinction by Generations United — a national recognition of outstanding intergenerational programs — and you can read more about that designation in our spring 2026 newsletter.

This year also brought another milestone: A chapter I authored on the Intergenerational Schools appears in the newly published Oxford Handbook of Intergenerational Connection (Oxford University Press, 2025). The chapter traces the reasons our model was built with intergenerational programs at its center, how those programs have grown and navigated real challenges including the pandemic, and how we continue to deepen community engagement today.

These are both examples of the Intergenerational Schools’ commitment to seeing school differently. Every day, our teachers, staff, students and families work together to innovate education. This commitment fosters a model that keeps working because it was built around what children and communities actually need. Thank you for being part of it.

Sports, Clubs & After School

Beyond the school day, students at the Intergenerational Schools have opportunities to explore their interests, build new skills, and connect with peers through a variety of after-school clubs and activities. These programs are led by teachers, parent volunteers, and community partners, and they change throughout the year based on student interest and available resources.

From creative arts and storytelling to cooking, gardening, journalism, and theater, clubs offer students a chance to discover what excites them in a supportive, multi-age environment. Recent clubs have included crochet, upcycling, health leadership, Girl Scouts, theater in partnership with Playhouse Square, cooking through Food Strong, and student journalism. Each campus offers different programs each quarter, so check Bloomz for current offerings and sign-up information.
