The Intergenerational Schools have been named a Program of Distinction by Generations United, a national organization that recognizes outstanding intergenerational programs connecting younger and older people across the United States.

The Program of Distinction designation recognizes programs that meet high standards of innovation, leadership, and best practices in intergenerational programming.

For 25 years, intergenerational connection has been at the heart of what makes our model work. Our students learn alongside learning partners from senior centers and community organizations, building relationships that strengthen both academic and social-emotional skills. Older adults share their wisdom and experience while staying engaged and connected to their community. These partnerships aren’t just occasional feel-good activities, they’re part of our curriculum, helping students practice communication, develop empathy, and see themselves as contributors to something larger than their classrooms.

“This recognition reflects the commitment of our staff, volunteers, and many community partners to create joyful community experiences for our students and elders which is so important as a society. Intergenerational learning teaches much more than academics,” said Stacy Miller, School Board Chair and longtime Learning Partner.

Generations United’s Intergenerational Program Certification recognizes programs based on criteria that measure effectiveness and impact. As a Program of Distinction, the Intergenerational Schools join a national network of programs representing the highest standards in intergenerational work.

This designation is awarded annually and recognizes organizations that:

  • Address documented community needs
  • Tie activities to program goals and participant input
  • Provide formal training and orientation
  • Collect and use evaluation data
  • Build strong partnerships with organizational leadership and community

The recognition comes during the Intergenerational Schools’ 25th anniversary year, a milestone that reflects both the longevity of our model and the countless moments of connection that have shaped it. From classroom learning partners to visits with senior center residents, these relationships demonstrate what’s possible when generations learn from and with each other.

Sports, Clubs & After School

Beyond the school day, students at the Intergenerational Schools have opportunities to explore their interests, build new skills, and connect with peers through a variety of after-school clubs and activities. These programs are led by teachers, parent volunteers, and community partners, and they change throughout the year based on student interest and available resources.

From creative arts and storytelling to cooking, gardening, journalism, and theater, clubs offer students a chance to discover what excites them in a supportive, multi-age environment. Recent clubs have included crochet, upcycling, health leadership, Girl Scouts, theater in partnership with Playhouse Square, cooking through Food Strong, and student journalism. Each campus offers different programs each quarter, so check Bloomz for current offerings and sign-up information.
