25 Years of Excellence

25 Years of Excellence

It will only take a few minutes in one of our two schools to realize that you’ve stumbled upon something special. From small, bustling, active classes to the confident smiles on our students' faces, you’ll quickly get the sense that Intergenerational Schools operate a little differently than traditional schools.

In 1999, the founders of the Intergenerational Schools dared to reimagine traditional schooling. They sought to create a tuition-free school where each child’s unique strengths, experiences and culture could be nurtured to foster knowledge. They envisioned a diverse, multi-generational setting that encouraged each student to recognize and grow in their roles and responsibilities within our greater community.

25 years later, that vision has transformed into two dynamic, multigenerational learning communities that honor each K-8 child’s unique developmental progression. Our campuses in Buckeye and Ohio City are flourishing tuition-free public charter schools where children thrive – and community grows.

What sets us apart from the other schools is our shared commitment to our mission. We hire dedicated staff who strive to connect, create and guide a multigenerational community of lifelong learners and spirited citizens as we strive for academic excellence. At Intergenerational Schools, we offer:

  • Small, multiage-blended classrooms with teachers “looping” with students for more than one year
  • Mastery-based learning
  • Engaging workshop model where students actively learn
  • Personalized goals and attention
  • Enrichments such as art, gym, music, yoga & athletics
  • Learning Partners that promote connection & a strengths-based approach
  • Caring, close-knit community
  • Opportunities to learn outside the classroom through partnerships and trips
  • A culture of service to others

The Intergenerational Schools are consistently named one of the highest-performing charter networks in Ohio. Our innovative model has been recognized and awarded for excellence in student results and programming numerous times:

  • Top tier of public elementary schools in Cleveland
  • The Intergenerational School (Buckeye), opened in 2000 was the only K-8 school in Ohio to receive “Excellent ratings” six times
  • Named Community Schools of Quality by the Ohio Department of Education

Aside from the awards and accolades, it’s our commitment to growing great students while fostering community that has helped us establish a reputation for excellence. We’ve built strong partnerships, established trust with our families and helped our students go on to high quality public and private high schools with the skills they need to succeed and thrive in school and beyond.

In the first decade of operation, our model was so innovative that it was chosen to receive federal funds for dissemination of our ideas to other public schools across the state. We were eager to share our exceptional whole-child, whole community approach to growing great students and hosted several visitors and observers from districts and charters alike.

As we look forward to another year of exceptional tuition-free learning at the Intergenerational Schools, we invite prospective families to get to know us better. Our two schools are open for tours this summer - contact us to get started. You can also start the enrollment process for 2024-25 by visiting our enrollment page
